Does it seem too difficult to learn SEO from scratch?

Do not worry, because I have prepared 6 tips to learn SEO for free to manage, though some functions, the positioning of the contents of your website or blog on search engines.

Google ranks websites in the results list based on algorithms, which can determine which content is most relevant to a particular search.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) encompasses many aspects and, to obtain excellent results, first of all, it is necessary to understand how it works.

For example, the creation of quality content, the speed of site page load times, etc.

Don’t think these things are too difficult or complicated because once you understand the “mechanism” it’s easier than you think.

Even if you hear completely unfamiliar words, which seem incomprehensible to you, don’t worry as this article is suitable and designed for beginners.

Unlike other disciplines, the work of SEO evolves day by day. For this, you must always be updated on the subject.

1. Understand how search engines work

Before getting into the center of the topic, it is important to know how search engines work: Google, Bing, Yahoo …

To explain it simply, I will divide the topic into three points:

1) CRAWLING AND SEARCHING FOR NEW CONTENT: This is a process by which search engines crawl the web for new content.

This happens thanks to crawlers (robots) that read online content.

It’s important for SEO because once you understand the basics of how search engines work, you’ll make sure Google finds content easily.

For example, you can facilitate the search engine’s task by inserting internal links through which you connect each page of your site to another and so on …

This way every single page will be scanned faster and then indexed …

2) INDEXING: based on the data collected during the crawl, search engines will interpret your site so that it can be included in the internet index.

3) POSITIONING: at this point the page that has been previously scanned and indexed is returned as a result on the search engine based on a specific query.

The latter is the fundamental part of SEO because if you have created content that meets the 200 factors that influence Google’s ranking, your articles will be positioned at the top of the search results list.

Create a post titled: “The best digital marketing strategies”

If Google thinks your content is more relevant than competing sites on the web, this happens:

When users type in the query, “Best Digital Marketing Strategies” will appear in the results of the first page of the search engine, your site’s content.

As you can imagine, this is a huge success because you will get visitors every day without having to spend money on advertising, such as Facebook Ads or Google Ads.

Also, other factors influence ranking, such as user feedback, thanks to which search engines understand if the search results are really useful and respond to the search intent.

2. What SEO is for: meaning and purpose

First of all, you need to know that SEO is one of the extremely important aspects of digital marketing.

Thanks to it you will allow your project to gain visibility on search engines, through strategies and activities aimed at facilitating Google in reading the contents of your site.

The goal is to improve your organic positioning in the SERP (Search Engine Result Page)

SEO is a process that requires continuous monitoring, during which a website is optimized.

This can take time; you may see the first placement results after weeks or months. (It also depends on the competition)

The most coveted goal of SEO is undoubtedly to get first place in the rankings.

But keep in mind that if you get there, everyone who reads your post doesn’t necessarily buy what you’re promoting.

To be successful in digital marketing, your site must lead to conversions, i.e. transform a significant portion of visitors into paying customers.

Once you are successful in generating traffic to the site, SEO also allows you to improve other aspects that facilitate user navigation and lead to faster conversion.

3. The importance of keywords

To see your site in the best search engine results, you need to choose the right keywords.

They are those phrases (consisting of one or more words) searched by users through Google to find what interests them. (Information, shopping, gossip, etc.)

To do this, you need to use a tool specially designed for this function.

I recently wrote a page that delves into the subject and in it, you can already access the tool you prefer for free.

Many aspiring bloggers ask, “How many keywords?”

Years ago bloggers often filled pages with keywords, but today this technique no longer works and, what’s more, you are penalized by Google.

So, based on my experience and according to the latest updates, it only takes 2 words of these to rank your pages on search engines.

What is an SEO plugin?

As soon as you create a website, one of the first SEO activities is to install a plugin that can help you rank on search engines.

Thanks to the automation of some WordPress Seo Plugins, you can configure a website simply and effectively, favoring the optimization of your content, in many fields.

Some of these are:

  • A preview of what your site looks like on Google
  • Detect if you have duplicate content
  • Readability score
  • Warns you when you exceed the number of characters in the title. There’s a word count to stick to when writing an article title. With a Seo plugin, you will be shown this limit.
  • Other…

4. There are several SEO optimization strategies

They are divided into:

  1. SEO on the page
  2. Off-page SEO

On-Page SEO consists of all the (technical) actions that you can perform directly on your site to influence Google’s interpretation of your content and therefore position in the SERP.

Here’s what you can firsthand to optimize your site:

  • Choice of keywords (as explained above, it is certainly one of the most important factors in indexing and positioning a website)
  • Optimization of the title and meta description. (These 2 fields are the title of your post and its description which appear in the search engine results, in the form of a snippet.

It is what the search engine shows in response to a query.

  • Create quality content (in addition to the technical side you need creativity and originality to create useful content for users.
  • Internal links (each blog post should contain links that refer to another page within the site, thus improving its positioning)
  • Enrichment of pages with videos, images, and infographics. (An article containing only words can be boring for many users. Also, keep in mind that you can also enter keywords in the image alt text.)

Search engine crawlers “don’t see” the image and so to understand what it represents, they use the text you should put in the image’s alt text tag to index it.

If you are wondering:
“But does Google also index the individual images of an article?”

The answer is yes.

The advantage is that once a user finds an image of his interest on the web, he can access the relevant page of the blog.

There is also the title tag, (the actual title of the image) which is also used by the search engine, to provide users looking for an image with the one most relevant to their search.

But the alt text tag is considered by Google to be the most important and is another way to better optimize a blog.

In this field, you simply have to write the description of the image which is inherent to the content.

As I said before you can also enter the keyword of the post.

By this, I don’t mean stuffing the alt text tags of all images with keywords. (I, for example, do this only with the first of the post.)

Off-page SEO, on the other hand, is a set of actions taken outside of your online site.

The goal is to improve your ranking in search engine results.

Many think that these are purely link-building strategies, but there are other techniques you should know about.

The 3 main actions of Off-Page SEO are:

  • The external links that lead to your pages (When you get links from authoritative sites they will help you rank the site.)

It’s like someone saying to Google: “This blog has interesting content” and consequently you will gain in rankings.

What is Link Building

Backlinks are very important for optimizing our site on search engines.

They work like this: a fairly important site (or more than one) inserts your link. (Of your blog)

The greater the number of these links (and the more authoritative the sites that link to your blog), the better your ranking on Google will be.

A Wikipedia article says: “Link building is an SEO technique aimed at increasing the number and quality of inbound links to a website.”

This technique allows you to increase the “value” and authority of a website and its positioning.

Times have changed because years ago Google gave a lot of importance to this type of link to the point that even those blogs with poor quality content were well ranked.

Today link building is just a piece that completes SEO strategies, but it is always a very important aspect, not to be underestimated.

(I noticed that Google ranked some of my front page posts with no backlinks from reputable sites.)

However, as reported by Wikipedia:

“Links from reputable websites continue to be an indicator of value for Google”

This Seo technique must take place in a completely natural way, that is, those who decide to insert a link of your content on their site, do it simply because they find, that you wrote, interesting.

By that, I mean, for example, that you don’t have to go and contact website owners to ask if they can include one or more links related to your posts in their articles.

As I said, times have changed and those who still exclusively use these “forcings” may have a nasty surprise or a penalty from Google.

When this happens, a website will suffer a drop in terms of ranking and therefore take a long time to recover the damage suffered.

  • Social media interactions (although social shares are not a direct ranking factor, they can help you “introduce yourself” to other people who are looking for information or otherwise.)
  • Reviews (allows Google to better understand your site. They can increase the domain authority and ranking of a website in the SERP)

There is many other Seo Off Page strategies, for example:

  • Guest blogging (writing articles on third-party blogs).
  • Brand Mention (Mentions of your company name from authoritative third-party sites, even without links, to make your brand recognizable to an audience.
  • Other

5 Content must be relevant and useful to users

The more relevant a piece of content is to a user’s search, the higher it ranks on the search engine results page. (SERP)

This will increase the visibility of your site and consequently also the organic traffic. (Number of visitors.)

SEO content must offer real value to the people who use it, and this is also appreciated by search engines.

First, you need to have your goal in mind.

For example, you can write a blog article for several purposes:

When you’ve set your goal, make sure your content is in the right SEO mindset, not just in terms of on-page and off-page techniques, but that it meets people’s needs.

Every time you create articles try to link them together (they have to go deeper into a certain topic) to transfer value to the content you created previously.

To make you understand what are the content models that are often used in SEO, I will give you some examples below:

  • Blog post
  • Guides
  • Infographics
  • Video
  • Review of products and services
  • Informative articles
  • Other…

So, having come this far, I want you to understand that it is equally important:

  1. Meeting the needs of your audience with content.
  2. Outperform your competitors in the SERPs via SEO

These 2 factors must always “travel” together because it is not enough to write a beautiful, long and complete article that answers the questions of users looking for that type of topic on Google …

… You must also optimize it from a Seo perspective: images, internal and external links, keywords in the title, in the meta description, and the content …

Otherwise, you wouldn’t rank well for a given search engine query.

How to create quality content

  • The title must attract and intrigue…
  • Create original and useful content for users.
  • No too big walls of text. Leave spaces from time to time and insert images or videos.
  • Share information from authoritative sources (for example, to learn more about a concept, link to Wikipedia!)
  • Short sentences and paragraphs
  • Don’t put too many affiliate links pointing to the merchant’s site. Google may report this activity as spam.
  • At the end of the content ask a question, so that readers interact. (In case you are writing articles on the blog)
  • Always stay up to date on the market niche you have chosen to create content on.

6 Keep track of your results

Monitoring your SEO efforts will allow you to understand if you are achieving significant results and in which area you need to make improvements.

In a nutshell, by measuring the SEO activities of your website you will be able to monitor traffic data, the number of links you have obtained, user behavior …

To do this, use Google Search Console and Google Analitycs; these are 2 great free tools.

The main indicators to be checked within them are:

  • Number of indexed pages
  • The ranking of keywords
  • Bounce rate and average time spent on pages. (The longer the visitor is on your page, the more your content gains value.)
  • Growth in organic traffic (Increase in the views of your web pages by users who search on Google).
  • The number of links obtained (Link Building)

In this way, you will always have under control the progress of your website.

Other factors that influence the optimization of a website

To get great results from your site you also need to know these SEO activities and put them into practice:

  • MOBILE-FRIENDLY: Make sure your site theme fits well with the mobile version as most internet searches are done on mobile devices.

The first thing you need to do when creating a blog is to buy a domain, (the name you decide to give to your site)

Once this is done, choose a hosting that guarantees you a fast and performing site.

The latter must have the function, when a user searches on Google, that the relative page is loaded in 1-2 seconds (even less)

Imagine looking for information on the Internet and that the article you are interested in takes a lifetime to load …

Exit the page and look for another article …

Read these 2 posts to figure out for yourself which one to choose:

To get a broader picture of the factors that influence Google in website ranking, take a look at the graph below:

Don’t make these mistakes:

a) Do not exchange links with other blogs, as it could deteriorate your ranking.

The blog owner you ask for a backlink will almost certainly want the same thing from you too.

However, if it checks your site (and does) and sees that it is not authoritative, it will not make this trade.

Keep in mind that this action is not well received by Google and you risk a penalty.

As I said before, link building has to be natural.

b) Don’t include backlinks in the comments.

You shouldn’t write your keyword and URL in a comment on another site.

Also in this case you could be penalized! Also, the blog owner may report you as spam!

c) Avoid putting your links in forum signatures.

(Many of these give you the option to put a signature with the HTML code.)

How to check a website’s optimization score

There are SEO programs and apps with which you can check if your blog is optimized at its best. One of these, which I use myself, is called Seo Check.

The operation is very simple:

  • Enter your domain name or URL
  • Type “confirm”
  • And you will be given a score.
  • Between 81 and 100 it means that it is well optimized (it will be green)
  • If it is less than 80, you need to improve something (yellow color)
  • A table will appear with a list of the improvements you need to make.

This type of program is really useful because you understand that sometimes, by simply changing the theme of your site, you get significant improvements, in terms of SEO.
